Production of space, planning and management on a metropolitan and urban scale
Production of space, planning and management on a metropolitan and urban scale
The purpose of this research group is to contribute to the discussion on the production of urban and metropolitan space in Brazil and Latin America, taking into account that in order to reproduce societies create forms arising from a given social-political order practised by social groups that respond to a current sociability and a given regulation and management of the use of the space and resources contained therein. In accordance with the historicity of the unique processes occurring in the places, the group strives to identify the agents of the processes and the subjects of the production of space resulting in different uses of the land, forms of occupation and management practices.

REAGRI – Research Network on Agricultural Regions
REAGRI – Research Network on Agricultural Regions
REAGRI was created at the time of the 1st National Seminar on the Restructuring of the Brazilian Sugar and Energy Sector: New and Old Spacialities, held in 2012 at UFRJ. This meeting registered a convergence of research lines and projects, developed in the Economic Geography study units and laboratories at UFRJ, UNICAMP, UECE, UNESP-Rio Claro, UFJF and UFG-Jataí, basically concerned with understanding the new regionalisation that has arisen in Brazil due to the regional specialisation of agriculture and the social and economic implications of the same. The researchers involved adhere to the following keywords: productive agricultural region; productive spatial circuits; logistics; agri-energy The Group´s proposals include: the definition of criteria for the identification of globalised agri-business regions and the mapping of the same; tracing the spatial circuits of the main products and sectors; assessing the social implications of this process in Brazil.

Research in Education Applied to Geosciences Study Group
Research in Education Applied to Geosciences Study Group
The repercussions in relation to the work conducted by the group are of a varied nature: - the creation of Master´s and PhD courses in the Teaching and History of Earth Sciences Programme with over 40 dissertations and10 theses presented; - the implementation of 6 lato sensu post-graduate courses for professors teaching Geosciences at higher education level; - the consolidated organisation of over 10 years of extension and refresher courses for teachers of Geosciences at primary and secondary school level; - participation in international, national and regional education congresses, the teaching of sciences and Geosciences; - publications in international and national magazines; - ongoing projects in relation to Geosciences and the continuous training of primary school teachers, with the support of FAPESP, CNPq, CAPES and the Petrobras Environmental Programme, whose line of research and goals focus on the teaching of Geosciences in primary and secondary education, geared mainly to the 5th to 8th grades.
Soil, Paleosols and Landscape Dynamics
Soil, Paleosols and Landscape Dynamics
This group works in 3 main areas, with a focus on pedogenesis and weathering processes: 1. Pedogenesis of current soil and the relationship of the same with forms of relief and archaeological sites; 2. Quaternary and pre-quaternary paleosols; 3. Paleosurfaces and the association of the same with soils and alteration profiles, striving to understand the evolution of the long-term geomorphological landscape. The group is currently involved in work in Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil (the states of Piaui, Bahia, Tocantins, Goias, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Parana).

The dynamics of landscapes in coastal environments
The dynamics of landscapes in coastal environments
The aim of the work associated with this research group consists of the research and analysis of the morphogenetic process that govern the organisation of landscapes in coastal environments, in addition to the impacts in relation to the use and anthropic occupation of these environments.

Underground Water Resources and Management of Hydrographic Basins
Underground Water Resources and Management of Hydrographic Basins
This research group strives to fully understand the hydrological cycle and the role of underground water in this greater context. As such, two main lines of research have been established: the study of the conditions of the occurrence of underground water and the interaction of the same within the hydrological cycle, and the interference of human activity in the quality and quantity of the resource. The other line of research, the management of water in hydrographic basins, aims at the knowledge of the dynamics of water, human interference in relation to these dynamics and the definition of criteria and models for the management of water resources in hydrographic basins. These lines are thought to be complementary, where study approach methodologies are adapted and developed mainly with a view to finding answers with regard to the rational management of surface water and specifically underground water, pursuant to a model of sustainable development.
