Geography, Tourism and Cultural Heritage
Geography, Tourism and Cultural Heritage
This research group, dedicated to Geography, Tourism and Cultural Heritage, associated with the Department of Geography Urban Geography Laboratory (IG/Unicamp), is run by Professor Maria Tereza and has enjoyed the participation of undergraduate, master´s and PhD students ever since it was created in 2004. The group´s activities are based on two lines of research: a geographic approach to cultural heritage and culture, nature and traditional populations.

Geography: Epistemology, History and the Environment
Geography: Epistemology, History and the Environment
The research group entitled Geography: Epistemology, History and Environment is composed of geographers and other social scientists who are concerned about the issue of geographic space and its representations, in accordance with the assertion that geographic space can be problematized in a number of ways and manners and regardless of the line of formation or speculation. As such, this group hopes to problematize the issues in relation to the history and epistemology of geography and the issue of the environment, based on dialogue between geography and the human sciences and Earth Sciences. As a main line of discussion the group strives to address the issue of the formation of the geographic episteme based on the cut of nature and how it was incorporated and transformed in the geographic debate and in the context of the philosophical formation of geography and the human sciences. The immediate development of this debate is the issue of empiricization and the theoretical, methodological discussions and the models in physical geography. Within this context, we attempt to specify the debate using geomorphology as a reference. Hence, works, colloquiums and seminars are produced aimed at problematizing and including the issue of nature in geography and physical geography within the philosophical, epistemological, methodological and even literary debate, assessing the breakdown of the same in terms of creating a geographic structure and its developments in the environment and in the teaching of geography.

Geomorphology: Dynamic Etchplanation and Environmental Fragility
Geomorphology: Dynamic Etchplanation and Environmental Fragility
This research group focuses on issues in relation to geomorphological dynamics in hot and humid tropical regions, based on the concept of dynamic etchplanation. Based on a close interaction between morphotectonics and geochemistry we attempt to define the types and patterns of genesis, evolution and dynamics of the relief in accordance with the geochemical and pedogenetic evolution of pedological coverage and its impact on the definition of the types of relief. Another line of research conducted involves the issue of environmental fragility in Brazil, particularly the fragility associated with the process of urbanisation and metropolisation.

Geosciences and Society
Geosciences and Society
This research group intends to investigate how knowledge of geosciences can be implemented in formal education and the general public and the implications of these processes for society. This involves a wide range of scopes: adaptation to environmental changes, natural risks, urban planning, management of water and other natural resources, production cycles and land management.
Geotechnologies
Geotechnologies
The group´s research focuses on methods for the extraction of geological information based on satellite images, aerogeophysical and geochemical data, as well as methodologies for the integrated spatial analysis of this data using geographic information systems (GIS). Techniques for processing georeferenced information are developed and implemented, such as digital image processing, geostatistics and specialist systems. The benefits of this work are particularly evident in the mining and oil/gas industries, more specifically in the area of exploration (the search for new deposits of these mineral assets). The results obtained by the group´s researchers, together with post-graduate students (Master´s and PhD), have benefitted the mineral and oil industries, with which the members of the group interact on a regular basis.

Geotechnologies Applied to Land Management
Geotechnologies Applied to Land Management
The work conducted by the group is geared to the development of research of a theoretical and practical nature with a view to the implementation of geotechnologies (Digital Cartography, Remote Sensing, Global Navigation Satellite Systems - GNSS, Geographic Information Systems - GIS) in the different activities comprising land management. Over the years the group has helped train undergraduate and post-graduate human resources, supplying subsidies for public policies, producing different results in the form of reports, undergraduate course conclusion work, master´s dissertations and PhD theses, producing new knowledge within the scope of geographic science.

Interdisciplinarity and Science of the Earth System as Bases for Basic Education
Interdisciplinarity and Science of the Earth System as Bases for Basic Education
The research group contributes to the development of methodologies for training teachers in the area of Geosciences. The group is backed by projects financed by a number of research development agencies. The research is based on the teaching and learning of systemic dynamics associated with geological time to study the planet in an integrated manner, consisting of the teaching of Geosciences, curriculum and teacher training.

Paleoenvironmental and environmental studies
Paleoenvironmental and environmental studies
The research group aims to conduct integrated studies geared to developing models that help us understand the environment, the dynamics of the same in relation to the evolution of terrestrial biota and its interaction with the physical environment. Moreover, this group strives to understand the transformations in relation to anthropic interference.
